Bittersweet Symphony

Posted by Stevio in Pop on May 18th, 2007

After yesterday mentioning The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, it had to be today’s video.

I have to admit that I’m a massive Verve fan and still hope, and pray, that one day the band would get back together. Sadly, it has now been eight years since they split, so I doubt that will ever happen.

‘Bittersweet Symphony’ was from the Wigan band’s third and final album ‘Urban Hymns’. The song is actually credited to Rolling Stones duo Keith Richards and Mick Jagger as it was supposedly based on their song ‘The Last Time’. Despite this, Richard Ashcroft wrote a fantastic song, which is surely up there with the best songs of all time.

If you’re in North London, you can visit the very same street featured in the video. The street is called ‘Hoxton Street’ which is suprisingly in ‘Hoxton’.

Oh and by the way, the people Richard Ashcroft bumps into in the video are actually extras, so don’t worry!

More Travis

Posted by Stevio in Indie on May 17th, 2007

I came across the video for ‘3 Times and You Lose’, which is another track from Travis’ new album ‘The Boy With No Name’.

I’ve heard quite a few tracks from the album after their appearance on Jools Holland’s Late Show, and from I’ve heard, the band have created a great album.

The video reminds me of The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ due to all the walking around Fran Healy and the band do!

You can listen to a selection of tracks from their new album via their MySpace page.

Placebo vs Kate Bush

Posted by Stevio in Rock on May 15th, 2007

Today’s selection is a very moody cover of ‘Running Up That Hill’ performed by Placebo.

Originally the song was released by Kate Bush in 1985 and did well in the UK charts. Placebo’s version was released last year after originally appearing on a bonus disc on 2003 album ‘Sleeping with Ghosts’.

I’m not sure what exactly is going on in the video, but it’s a great cover, and is ten times better than the original version.
