Perfect ‘Perfect Day’

Posted by Stevio in Blues on October 6th, 2007

The 1997 version of Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’ still sounds great today as it did all those years ago.

With performers such as Bono, David Bowie, Elton John, Tom Jones, and of course, Lou Reed himself, it’s an all-star cast. There’s a few oddities in there, like Shane McGowan, but it’s all fun and well worth a listen.

The video originated as a BBC promo, but went on to become a ‘Children In Need’ charity single.

Luciano Pavarotti RIP

Posted by Stevio in Classical on October 5th, 2007

With Luciano Pavarotti’s recent passing, I thought it would be appropriate to add ‘Nessun dorma’. It’s a song I first heared during the World Cup in 1990.

It’s a superb song with an even more superb performance from possibly the greatest ever tenor.

Best song ever? Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris?

Posted by Stevio in Soundtracks on October 4th, 2007

The Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris is one of my most favourites songs ever. I’ve heard it so many times and still it sounds as wonderful as the first time I heard it.

Of course, it’s another song from yet another movie soundtrack, this time the ‘City of Angels’. If you haven’t got the soundtrack, it’s well worth buying, it features other amazing songs, like Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Angel’, Alanis Morissette’s ‘Uninvited’ and U2’s ‘If God Will Send His Angels’. The film score by composer Gabriel Yared is fantastic too.

I have to mention Ronan Keating’s cover of this song, as it was a total disaster. Artists should know by now that straight copies of classic songs just don’t work.
